ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY 2024

Northern Heart Films is dedicated to minimizing our environmental impact and championing sustainable practices within the film production industry. We are committed to ongoing assessment and improvement of our environmental performance.

ABOUT NORTHERN HEART

Based in Wigan, Greater Manchester, we are a small production company passionate about crafting documentaries that spotlight the personal stories of individuals within our local community and across the UK. We strive to create films that resonate with viewers on an emotional level. Our clients include the BBC, The Guardian, BFI Doc Society, The Mirror, and Samaritans, and our work has been showcased at festivals, on television, and online.

OUR IMPACT

Our current estimated carbon footprint is between 5 and 10 tonnes of CO2 per year, primarily attributed to:

  • Travel: Due to the nature of our work, weekly travel is essential, primarily by car and occasionally by public transport. Air and sea travel are rare.

  • Office Space: We operate within a shared building where we have limited control over energy suppliers.

CURRENT SUSTAINABLE PRACTISES

We are proud of our existing efforts to minimize our environmental impact, which include:

  • Car Sharing: We prioritize minimizing the use of multiple vehicles for travel.

  • Plant-Based Diets: Both company directors maintain vegetarian diets.

  • Recycling: We actively recycle and avoid single-use plastics.

  • Reduced Paper Consumption: We minimize paper usage in our productions.

OUR POTENTIAL AND TOOLS

As we grow, we recognize the potential for increased carbon usage. To mitigate this, we will utilize the following tools:

  • Albert Carbon Calculator: To measure and track our carbon footprint.

  • AddGreen: To identify and implement sustainable alternatives.

  • Doc Society Green Documentary Checklist: To ensure environmentally conscious practices throughout our productions.

OUR GOALS FOR 2025

  • Sustainability Training: Keep up to date with sustainability training to all stakeholders through BAFTA Albert's free training schemes.

  • Carbon Offsetting: Offset unavoidable carbon emissions, such as those from travel.

  • Compliance: Ensure all productions adhere to environmental legislation, regulations, and codes of practice.

  • Sustainable Procurement: Prioritise sustainable goods and services.

  • Regular Monitoring: Utilise Albert and AddGreen calculators to monitor our carbon footprint.

  • Green Production Practices: Implement the Doc Society Green Documentary Checklist on all productions.

REVIEW

This policy will be reviewed quarterly throughout 2024 to ensure its effectiveness and alignment with our sustainability goals.
